Overview: An exciting modular percussion work for 5-8 players.
The Transformer series builds exhilarating percussion works out of a finite set of compositional blocks that can be used in a modular fashion as desired. Alpha Variation from Transformer I is no exception. The components which commonly make up each of the works in this series include; Themes 1 & 2, Patterns 1 & 2 (each being 1-2 bars in length) and Stops (breakdown section).
Due to the implied modular nature of these works, memorisation is encouraged. In addition, the use of standard hand signals may be appropriate also. This links to the idea that, as the students gain a high degree of comfort with each of the elements of the pieces, it is conceivable that an actual arrangement could be improvised as long as there was clear leadership from the conductor. If this level of familiarity is achieved with the work(s), students can have an enormous amount of fun coming up with their own arrangements as well as having student led/student conducted performances.
Possible hand signals for 'on the fly' modular arrangements could include:
Note: c) d) & f) pick upon typical gestures used by jazz musicians. However, all signals can be changed or modified.
Enjoy!
